Garden Club 2023 Registration is open!

The NorthWest Initiative Garden Club registration is now open.  To register online, visit our online registration form.  You can also use our printable paper registration form if you prefer.

All registrations must be completed by June 7th

How much does this cost?

$0.  Free.  Why? This project was funded in whole or in part by the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan Fitness Foundation.  Huzzah!

Where and When

Location: 510 W. Ottawa (First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Ottawa and Pine)

When: Wednesdays, June 14th through August 16th.

Younger kids (1st grade – 3rd grade) 10 am – 12 pm

Older kids (4th grade +) 1 pm – 3 pm

Note: If there are not enough students to fill both time slots, the classes will be combined and take place at the 10 am – 12 pm time slot.  A snack will be provided, but it will not be a full-sized meal.

What will my child do and learn?

A portion of our curriculum will of course be outdoors tending to plants, but that’s not all they will earn.  Your child will learn about the steps it takes for their food to grow, and arrive at their table.  They will learn about nutrient dense seeds, and run scientific experiments (involving fire!) to see the difference in calories between an almond and a marshmallow.  They will play fun games with other kids their age to reinforce the day’s lesson.  They will also have a snack that they help prepare themselves, and journal their experiences in the garden club.

This video was shot in 2014. The program is structured in the same way, though, the current Community Manager is Stephanie Onderchanin.
