Welcome Cavanaugh Elementary!

    Summer Garden Camp 2010

Thank You Donors and Volunteers!

  • MSU Recycling provided the lumber for the beds
  • Paramount Coffee provided the bags for pathways
  • The Board of Water and Light provided the woodchips
  • The Garden Project provided the compost and seeds
  • Mr. Tomboulian and Ms. Foltz provided buckets and shovels (Cavanaugh staff)
  • Volunteers and students provided hours of intensive labor (THANK YOU!)

The Food Systems Project would also like to thank the volunteers from Central
Michigan University's Alternative Breaks Program who helped us break ground
at the garden site in April.  Thank you Christina, Ashley, Trisha, Samantha and Tim for
dedicating your time to this very important project!  FSP would also like to thank Janine Boylan
from Vision 2020 for her assistance on that day!

FSP would also like to thank Clyde Baldwin Jr., Caleb Kisor, Anthony Yarber, Qosmon Sagataw
and Cavanaugh 5th grades for their assistance in building the raised beds and moving the
compost and wood chips.  This garden would not have been possible without the hard work
and dedication of volunteers like you!

The Cavanaugh School Garden is in need of volunteers to help water, weed and assist in the
classrooms.  This garden is also in need of the following items:  3 picnic tables, a small shed,
hoses, 24 hand shovels, 12 hand cultivators, 30 pairs of various size garden gloves, 5 gallon
buckets, shovels, hoes, rakes and garden hoses.  If you would like to volunteer or donate for the
Cavanaugh Garden, please contact
Joy at 999-2894.

The Food Systems Project is excited to start a third school garden program
this spring (2009) with Cavanaugh Elementary School!  Over 250 students
started seeds for their classroom's garden plots, prepared and sampled
trail mix and fresh salsa, learned about nutrition and food pyramid
placement of the foods they prepared and wrote their very own garden
stories.  Summer Garden Camp kids continued to care for the garden over
the summer, did arts and crafts, played games and sampled over thirty
different foods.  As you can see, Cavanaugh just loves their garden!
